Technical Support Engineer -- Berkeley
Xinet is looking for a full time Technical Support Engineer for its Berkeley office.
Knowledge of a language besides English is a plus, but not required.
We manufacture Digital Asset Management software for the special needs of the advertising, printing, publishing, and prepress industries as well as Unix-Macintosh-Windows networking software.
Xinet is a company based in Berkeley, California which has been in operation since 1991. For more information about Xinet, check the company website: www.xinet.com.
The day-to-day tasks of the job are as follows:
- Answering phone and email technical support questions
- Verifying and locating bugs in our various products
- Testing new versions of the products
Supporting Xinet's products (FullPress, WebNative, WebNativeVenture, and Portal) requires familiarity with IP Networking, Macintosh File Sharing, Print Spooling, Postscript, RIPs, Adobe layout and image manipulation products (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat), PDFs, OPI replacement, QuarkXPress, Internet Browsers, SQL, JavaScript, Apache web-servers, Unix system administration, Windows system administration, script writing, backup and archiving solutions, and more.
To apply for this job you do NOT need expertise in all these areas, or even most of them. However, you must be someone who learns quickly, who likes to be challenged, and who can communicate complex ideas IN WRITING.
Required Skills:
- Must have experience troubleshooting software problems
- Must have good writing skills
- Must truly enjoy puzzling through complex software problems
- Must be comfortable with learning new programs and workflows, often with little guidance
- Must be comfortable working through live problems with customers over the phone
Desirable Skills:
- Experience in the Printing or PrePress industry
- Experience with Unix or Windows server administration
- Experience with some form of programming
- Experience doing tech support for server-side software
The job involves a lot of writing, sometimes on complex topics. At some point in the interview process, all applicants will be asked to write a short essay on either their strengths as a worker or their perspective on how to best solve software problems. We are looking for people with communication styles that are clear, succinct, and personable. The use of technical jargon, endless technical acronyms, or "resume-speak" will not help.
Sending an essay along with the initial application will definitely get our attention. Additional writing samples can also be sent, but bear in mind that we are looking for the ability to write persuasively and clearly as much as the ability to document technical details.
Applicants from diverse backgrounds (with some computer experience and the good writing skills described above) are welcome. You don't have to be a System Administrator to apply!
The software we support is complex and ever-changing, so it is a true challenge to master this job. Therefore, please do not apply if you know you don't intend to stay for a long time.
The job is a full time, permanent position with good benefits and salary commensurate with experience. Xinet offers a generous vacation policy and comfortable corporate lifestyle.
